So a few weeks ago when Germany was a frozen tundra, I did something that I did not even know was on my bucket list. I ice skated on a swimming pool and it was awesome. Those of you from colder climates are laughing at me right now, but coming from Houston where a rare snow flurry can close down the city, this was a treat.
There's this awesome new French-Canadian au pair, Valerie, who lives on my street and she invited me to come ice skate on her host family's swimming pool. After verifying I heard her correctly (apparently a common activity in Canada, go figure) and questioning the safety of this activity, we swept off the new snow layer blanketing the ice and the Texan and a Canadian took on the swimming pool on ice skates. Valerie even taught me all sorts of spins and techniques because this is the sort of thing they do in P.E. class. We play dodgeball, Canadians play on ice skates. Oh stereotypes.
You can go ahead and file this under "Things I Never Thought I'd Do".

ReplyDeleteP.s.
canadians.
Hahaha, this is so freaking cool
ReplyDeleteAnd...
the other day in class I told my 13th graders that every stereotype they've ever heard about Canada on shows like HIMYM was absolutely true. Oh, to be able to corrupt the minds of young[er] foreigners.
omg!! soooo cool!! i had no idea! i thought people in cold climates emptied their pools out in the winter!! so naive this florida girl is ... of course i live in the north now but in nyc there's not really anyone with inground pools that i would know. i think i'm gonna put this on my bucket list now! :) thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeletehaha so awesome! look at you, you guys are all ready for skating on the canals in amsterdam next winter. :)
ReplyDeleteThat is the most bad ass thing I've ever seen! & yes coming from Houston that's definitely going to be a FIRST!!!
ReplyDeletehaha that looks so fun!! i would probably be nervous the whole time that the ice would break through... that scene in little women where amy falls through the ice..traumatized me at a young age. haha
ReplyDeletei've always wanted to do that!!! so cooll!!
ReplyDeleteIt took me a good 30 min of skating to get over the fear, not gonna lie
ReplyDeleteThat looks like SO MUCH FUN!!
ReplyDeleteHow fun is that?? I didn't realize it was that cold there to do that. Must be a bit chillier than it was last year in Germany. Glad you got to do it!
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm supposed to be living in the warmest part of Germany - there were a couple of weeks we maybe could've even given Finland a run for its money ;)
ReplyDeleteSeriously, after your post I am DYING to!
ReplyDeleteNo I totally thought that too... but saving it for an ice skating adventure is wayyyy better! Find a friend with a pool outside the city :) Except I'm telling you, it has to be WAYYY too dang cold.
ReplyDeleteI want to sit in on your class someday. We use the HIMYM jokes on Valerie all the time - thank goodness she's an awesome sport about it!
ReplyDeleteHa! That looks like amazing fun... but what are those red things? Totally pro toboggans, or what?!!
