BAVARIAN BREAKFAST

By Unknown - 3:41 AM

There is one very important thing you have to do before attending Oktoberfest... and that thing is eating.

Those maß of beer must have something to help absorb them, so before you consume an entire liter of specially brewed Bavarian Oktoberfest beer, why not prep yourself with a all-Bavarian breakfast?

The true Bavarian men we stayed with decided to start off our day at the Wiesn right and served up a traditional bavarian breakfast. We woke up to the table all set, and I've gotta say, it's pretty presh when boys go to the effort to do something like this. They were determined to show two American girls how real Bavarians eat.

Bavarian Breakfast Components

Brezen - pretzels (in Bavaria)
Obatzda - a German cheese spread that is a blend of soft white cheeses like camembert, butter, paprika, onions, salt and garlic. This stuff is bomb and is perfect on a pretzel.
Weißwurst - a German white sausage typically eaten before noon. It is heated in hot water and served straight from the pot. You remove the casing before eating and it is served with Weißwurstsenf, a sweet mustard.
Weissbier - a German wheat beer that is low in hop flavor and  top-fermented. This really means nothing to me, but it is very different from a traditional pils or other light beer as they are less transparent and packed with flavor.

And I gotta say, I loved it. Replace that weissbier with a helles and I could eat it almost daily. Weißwurst is certainly a different sausage experience as the texture is almost spongy and you can taste some of the herbs blended in, but the mustard balances it all well. Plus, I'm a big advocate of protein and pretzels for breakfast.

What do you think? Is this something you could sink your teeth into?

And I agree, you need to be prepared for the Wiesn!

  4. The array if sausage presented as a breakfast food in Germany in my time of visiting there has been astonishing. Not a big fan of the malt beer or white sausage, but what a lovely thing for them to do.

  5. I actually prefer Weissbier to Helles, but it did take some getting used to the flavor. Even better if you get a dunkles Weissbier. And Colaweizen (weissbier and cola mixed together) is a delicious way to get your caffiene.

  6. So proud of you! I recall a time when your culinary range was limited Kraft Mac & cheese, hamburger helper, Totino's pizza & MickeyD's kids meal/the burger with ketchup only. Glad you have/are/will continue to 'spread your wings' and are flying.

Love you, miss you, proud of you!

    Love,

  7. Really great - you're a cultural anthropologist in Germany, dear! And it's really good that you explained to take off the Weißwurst casing - I have heard about unsuspecting foreigners who complained about the chewing-gum-quality of the sausage ;-)

  8. That cheese sauce & pretzel combo sounds super delicious! I would definitely love to try that for breakfast. And I'm sure I'd give the sausage a try too. And who wouldn't be up for a nice beer with breakfast?! All sounds good to me!

  13. It's definitely a little different and certainly not my favorite of the German sausages, but hard not to dive into it in the spirit of the day! Plus, nothing some awesome mustard can't help ;)

  15. I've actually never been presented other sausages and breakfast, which is a shame because I'd much prefer that to the usual bread, jam and quark I am offered.
